Dr. Katchala Nanaji is a dynamic scientist and academic currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Chemistry and Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, India. A native of Kummarilova village in Andhra Pradesh, he completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemistry from Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, Puttaparthi, before earning his Ph.D. from IIT Madras under the guidance of Prof. U.V. Varadaraju & Dr. S. Anandan. His doctoral research focused on the design and development of advanced electrode materials for energy storage applications, emphasizing not only lab-scale innovation but also pilot-scale implementation. For his outstanding contributions during his Ph.D., he received the Prof. Werner Prize for the best doctoral thesis and the Institute Research Award from IIT Madras. Dr. Nanaji’s core research lies in electrochemical energy storage systems, including Li/Na-ion batteries, supercapacitors, and Li/Na–sulfur batteries, with a particular focus on novel carbon and metal oxide materials, sustainable synthesis methods, and solid-state chemistry. His expertise extends across materials characterization, device fabrication, and battery performance evaluation, making his work highly impactful for both academia and industry.

Before joining IIT Bhilai, Dr. Nanaji amassed significant industrial and research experience. He worked as a Senior Manager- Principal Engineer at the Battery Innovation Centre, Ola Electric, in Bangalore, where he led work on dry electrode coating for Li-ion batteries, a promising scalable and eco-friendly alternative to conventional wet processes. Prior to that, he served for five years as a Scientist at the International Advanced Research Centre for Powder Metallurgy and New Materials (ARCI), Hyderabad, a premier R&D institute under the Government of India, where he executed several national and international projects in the domain of batteries, supercapacitors, and hybrid energy systems. Over the years, he has authored more than 35 peer-reviewed publications, holds multiple patents, and has been the recipient of several national-level recognitions, including the Young Scientist Award by the Dr. K.V. Rao Scientific Society. At IIT Bhilai, Dr. Nanaji continues to lead a vibrant research group that works on energy storage materials and device technologies, including battery prototyping, performance validation, and scalable fabrication techniques. His interdisciplinary approach, combining chemistry, materials science, and electrical engineering, positions him at the forefront of India’s clean energy transition and electric mobility revolution.
